Rachel watched the light house as the SS Chansey slipped her bulk around the island to the port.
She looked down at her cubone.
"Cue. Cubone." It said, looking warily down at the water. It waved its thick bone club at the water Pokemon swimming as shadows under the wake of the ship. Rachel laughed.
"Yeah, there's a lot of water Pokemon out today. Thanks for watching out for me, Ajax." The hum of the passengers on the deck grew excited as they saw the port come around the landmass. They were almost there, to Lialta, where Rachel would go backpacking on a Pokemon adventure. She smiled with excitement.

Ben watched the water, paying no attention to the marvelous sheer cliffs of Azzurra. He glanced at the lighthouse.
"Look, Jeffrey, there's a Dragon-gym up in that lighthouse."
The Charmander nodded with excitement. "Char! Char!"
Ben tried to mimic his Charmander's enthusiasm. Instead, his stomach churned.
Ben ran for the edge of the boat.
And he heaved right next to a trainer and her Cubone.

Rachel and her Cubone looked a bit disgusted with what had just happened. Rachel wasn't going to yell at the guy, but she still looked put off.
Cubone looked at Charmander as if demanding an explanation as to why the water Pokemon below were swimming in the Charmander's Trainer's sick.
"Cue? Cubone."
Rachel, getting over her initial reaction but still raising an eyebrow, asked, "Have you been like that the entire trip? Cause that must have been rough."

"I ca-" Ben was interrupted again.
He held the railing for a second, wiped his mouth, and looked up.
"I can't say it's been fun."
"Hi," he muttered, second-guessing his decision to put out his hand. He pulled it back.
"I'm Ben. Is that your Cubone? Those aren't native to Lialta!"

Rachel kept her distance but did offer a sympathetic smile.
"Yeah. My mom caught him for me when I was little. We've been training together ever since." She smiled warmly down at the embarrassed Cubone, who jumped up and hit the Pokeball on her waist to enter it. "Sorry, hes a bit shy to direct attention."
Rachel looked at the Charmander and smiled. "I've seen a few of these pass through Vermillion City with trainers, though we mostly see Squirtle; you from Kanto too?"

Ben saw the pier approaching with a large amount of relief.
"Kanto?" he realized he was still talking to the other trainer. "No, no. Close, though. I'm from Johto. Goldenrod City, actually."
He looked down at the Charmander. "This is my partner, Jeffrey. My mom was a trainer in Kanto years ago. This guy came from an egg that her Charizard had."
"Char! Char!" Jeffrey was happy to receive any attention.

Rachel nodded, and smiled at the friendly Charmander. Then she picked up her large pack as the ship slid into port and drifted to a stop. She and Ben were near one of the ship's disembarking ramps.
While they waited for it to lower, she asked, "So are you going to challenge any gyms in Lialta? Seems like you already know a lot about this place."
Then Rachel frowned, realizing she didn't even know where the first gym was. She also didn't have a map. So she hadn't packed everything.
"Er.. Hmm. Where would the first gym even be?" she wondered aloud. And then, realizing she hadn't given him her name, said, "Oh, and I'm Rachel by the way."

"I'm Ben! But I already said that," he bumbled.
"The first gym you technically see is there, at the lighthouse," Ben pointed. "That's the Dragon-type gym. Beatrix Naga is the leader.
Ben thought for a moment, "But she only takes challenges from trainers with six badges."
It was an awkward silence until they made port. Ben wasn't particularly good at small talk.
He practically ran down the boarding ramp, embracing the land with glee. Charmander eagerly pursued the trainer.
Ben left the docks immediately, heading for the wild cliff-top meadows. He had heard there were several powerful Pokemon in the area. He had a bag full of Pokeballs to waste.
He entered a canopied area, green and pleasant. There was a spring bubbling nearby. Ben searched the area, peering over the water. Maybe he could find a Water-type...
That's when he spotted it. An Abra, sleeping across the pond.
"Jeffrey, Metal Claw!" Ben ordered, and the orange lizard ran forward, its powerful claw colliding with the Abra. Abra cried out, and Ben tossed a Pokeball.
The Abra Teleported, dodging the Pokeball, and disappeared.

Rachel had gone straight to the Pokemon center to get comfortable in the room she checked into. Then she had left to go buy some Pokeballs with the money she had been saving for this journey for a couple of years.
She didn't actually have any other than the two that held her Nidoran and her Cubone.
When she left the Pokemart, she went for a walk to the meadows, letting both Cubone and Nidoran out of their Pokeballs. They were as excited as she was, and as there were no other people around, they let themselves be curious and silly in the sunlit area. Rachel was just about to tell her Pokemon to get ready for a run when she saw an Abra awake and looking bruised, sitting in the branch of a nearby tree. She frowned, looking worried. She hated seeing Pokemon injured.
Making a snap decision, she tossed a Pokeball at the injured Abra, thinking she would take it to the Pokemon Center for treatment. If it was one of her Pokemon, she could keep it safe and help it become strong. It was Rachel's favorite part of being a trainer.
Rachel watched with concern, but after twitching a bit, the Pokeball locked and the Abra was caught.
She smiled, and picked up the Pokemon. "Hey, sorry if that surprised you. I can help you feel better, okay? Get a good nap until then, alright?" she said to the Abra in the Pokeball.

Wheezing, puffing, and heart pounding, Ben ran down the road. Jeffrey followed, his tail flame spectacular and large.
In the distance, he saw the trainer from before, clutching a Pokeball.
"Hey!" he shouted, waving his arms. As he got closer, he became more audible. "You haven't seen an Abra, have you? I was just trying to catch one, when it Teleported away."

"Huh? Oh. Yeah, I just caught one myself; I was worried for it because it looked injured so it's resting right now until I take it to Nurse Joy," said Rachel. She put the Pokeball away.
Then she looked back over to her Pokemon. "Ready for some exercise?" She asked, clearly thinking the interaction was done.

Ben paused. "Injured?"
He was beginning to realize what had happened.
"You caught an injured Abra? Did you even battle it?"

Rachel glanced back at him. "What? No. It was already weakened by whatever attacked it."
She sounded distracted as if she didn't know why he kept asking questions when she was clearly trying to prep her Pokemon for training.

Ben's eye twitched.
He dashed toward the other trainer.
"I WEAKENED IT, YOU IDIOT! YOU CAUGHT MY ABRA!"
Ben collided with her, reaching for the Pokeball.

"Hey!" Rachel exclaimed when Ben collided with her. They fell over as Ben knocked her off balance but Rachel managed to snatch her newly caught Pokemon away from the other trainer's reaching grasp.
"What's your problem? I caught this Abra, and I'm going to take care of it! You can't just take it because you think it's the one you didn't catch!"
Both of Rachel's Pokemon looked at Ben, displeased. Ajax the Cubone looked like he was prepared to smack the trainer for attacking Rachel. Her Nidoran hid behind Cubone, scared but worried for his trainer. Neither Pokemon did anything, and waited.
