Marcus snatched the poke ball out of the air, and blinked at Guy. The dude was just giving him a Noivern? He'd heard of this pokemon, but never seen one -- they were incredibly, impossibly rare in Hoenn, and even in Kalos he'd only ever seen Noibats.
"Right, I'll chase her down."
Marcus released the pokemon, and stared as the Noivern appeared. The Black, purple, and teal pokemon was absolutely stunning. Half Marcus's height, but at least two to three times longer from head to tail and from wingtip to wingtip, the dragon-bat was imposing and impressive. Despite this, it timidly tilted his head down and backed away from Marcus, an unfamiliar face.
"Hey, buddy. I'm Marcus." Marcus pointed at the fleeing Crobat. "See that? I'm going to get on your back. Lets fly over and kick that bat's ass, okay?" Marcus carefully ordered his tone and voice to appeal to the Noivern's senses and calm the Pokemon around its new trainer. The Noivern understood, and, in a show of intellect, reared up and spread its wings, turning is back towards Marcus. Marcus climbed on and patted the Noivern's neck plume. "Let's go!" he called, and the Noivern took to the air powerfully.
"Whooaaaa ho ho!" laughed Marcus in glee as the hunter and dragon shot through the air towards the Crobat at breakneck speeds. "Right, let's gain some altitude on them, Noivern, and knock them out of the air!"

The assassin held on to her Crobat as tight as she could. The brat brought out a Noivern. Perfect. No quick getaway this time. At least the gym leader had been taken care of.
"Watch out Crobat!" the woman called out, but it was too late. The Noivern hit the bat Pokemon, and the jarring impact made the assassin lose her grip. She fell a few feet, busting through a snow covered roof into the warehouse below.
She landed with a hard impact on the solid floor of the empty warehouse. Crobat fluttered in through the hole the assassin had created, fleeing its attackers.
"Fine, he wants to play this game?" the assassin spoke to her Crobat. "Lets play!"

When Marcus and Noivern crashed into the Crobat, knocking the assassin through the roof below, Marcus whooped. He petted the Noivern. "Haha! Now that's flight. C'mon, Noivern." Marcus pointed at the unbroken part of the roof and the Noivern landed.
"You want to battle? Your funeral!" Marcus said, grinning maliciously down at the assassin. He got off the back of his Noivern, who was watching the Crobat's movements cautiously. He patted the Dragon-bat and whispered to it. "Hey buddy. You're doing great. Mind if I ask you to fight that Crobat?"
The Noivern turned his head to prod Marcus's hand with his nose. Letting out a squeak that was quite quiet to Marcus's ears, the Noivern took off to circle the Crobat. Apparently, from the Crobat's agitated reaction, and responding cry, the squeak had been the bat equivalent of a battle yell. Marcus smiled. He was going to get along quite well with this new Pokemon. He had nothing to worry about.

The Crobat and Noivern flew up into the air in a dizzying spiral around one another. The assassin smirked, and seeing an opportunity, called out "Confuse Ray!" Marcus responded quickly, calling out "Psychic!"
The Crobat immediately responded, and its eyes began to glow, but the Noivern was faster. The Noivern's eyes glowing purple, the air between both pokemon became wavy and unsteady, like a mirage or an illusion. The Crobat cringed away in mental pain, losing altitude. However, it managed to recover and stop its fall. The bat was no unsteady flier. The Noivern dove at the Crobat to attack again, but the recovered Crobat's eyes glowed with a ghastly blue ray. It affected the Noivern's vision, blurring it and causing hallicinations. The confused Noivern quickly lost altitude with uncertain wing flaps, and the Crobat shot up higher to prepare a powerful flying smash into the Noivern. "Snap out of it Noivern! Try to use Hurricane, c'mon!" called Marcus, hoping the flying attack would be able to hit even the farthest, fastest opponent with sheer size and power, but it was not to be.
Noivern crashed into a building, hurting itself. It stood and shook its head to try and clear it, but the Crobat slammed into it from above and knocked it backwards. Again, trying to respond to its trainer, the Noivern tried to stand and use a move, but the Crobat caught a wing with its toxin-imbued teeth, and flew away.
Marcus swallowed carefully. This was bad. "Noivern, hey! Calm down. You can do this. Open your eyes on my mark and hit that Crobat with the most powerful Psychic you can muster!" The assassin below him was muttering commands to her Pokemon. The Crobat had no trouble hearing.
The Noivern responded, and beneath his black eyelids a faint purple glow shone as it prepared the powerful attack. The Crobat dove once more, but this time, just before the Pokemon hit the Noivern, Marcus called out "Now!" and once more the mental pain was unleashed into the Crobat. The Pokemon passed out mid-flight and fell onto the roof of the building the Noivern was standing on.
"Right, now that that's settled...." started Marcus, turning to look down at the assassin below him. "I'm going to show you why you don't poison or attack Gym Leaders."
The young bounty hunter quickly aimed his rifle at the assassin and fired a taser round, hoping to paralyze and capture her. He didn't bother to listen to any protests.

Kurtis inhaled sharply as he was injected with Crobat anti-venom. The doctor attentively examined the monitoring devices attached to the gym leader. He was going to be ok, though he'd have to take it easy for a day or two. Weavile stood by his bedside, her presence comforting the gym leader. Even if the Crobat had gotten past her, Sophie always made Kurtis feel protected and safe. She was his most loyal friend. Kurtis then turned his head and saw Guy, sitting in the room. If Sophie was his most trusted friend, Guy came in a close second. The man had tolerated Kurtis' shenanigans for many years, and yet again had saved Kurtis' life. Without the Pokemon researcher's help back in Johto and now in Lialta, there would have been no hope for the little trainer from Blackthorne who liked Ice-type Pokemon so much.
"Thank you," Kurtis spoke for the first time since he had been attacked; the Crobat venom had been painful, to say the least. He wasn't sure exactly where his gratitude was directed, but everyone in the room deserved it.
Kurtis thought for a moment. "Have we heard from that trainer? Marcus? I saw you gave him the Noivern, Guy. Wasn't that for Roxy?"

Guy looked up from the magazine, "Who? Marcus? Is that the guy who you battled? Um... no. I haven't heard from him. Wouldn't be surprised if we don't ever again. As for that Noivern? Roxy didn't know I had it. She doesn't need to know I gave it away, either. Besides, I got... er, made her a new gift. Lady and I baked these pastries." He reached beside the chair and lifted a basket. He reached back down and pulled up a DVD, "And this is for you, Kurtis! It's a DVD of 'Nude Nuns with Big Guns."

Marcus dumped the unconscious, paralyzed assassin in front of a police officer. "She tried killing me and the Gym Leader, Kurtis Ise. She also shot at him. Here's my number and address and stuff for any information you need later, but I want to make sure that Kurtis is okay. Also... she said something about the other gym leaders getting attacked as well."
"Er.. right, sir, but I'll need you to come with me for questioning --"
"Great, so you'll take care of that. Later!" shouted Marcus, turning tail and releasing Noivern in order to jump on his back and fly away. Unfortunately, Marcus wasn't great at this maneuver quite yet, and he slipped off the Noivern's back. The Noivern make a noise and picked him up like a mouse in both its feet.
"Uff. That works too, I guess. The hospital, Noivern! Let's check on Kurtis!" The two flew off across Taurinno.
Soon, the Noivern dropped the graceful Marcus onto the concrete in front of the hospital, and after dusting himself off and muttering about flight attendants, the man walked into the hospital and asked the front desk where he could find Kurtis, and if he could visit. He was directed, as the second allowed visitor (he may have lied and said Kurtis was family), the young guy arrived outside to hear Guy say something about big guns.
He knocked on the frame of the door from the outside, not wanting to enter without an invitation.

Kurtis laughed. "You always know my favorite movies," he accepted the present from Guy. The eccentric researcher's gifts were always almost as entertaining as the man himself.
"Come in!" he told the trainer, who was finally returning. "Did you get her?"
Marcus answered positively. At least she was taken care of. Still, Kurtis was worried. The woman had said that all of the gym leaders were in trouble.
That's when Kurtis noticed his PokeGear buzzing. He reached for it, but as he took hold of it, the call ended. Aden Hayes' name popped up on the screen, indicating a missed call. "Shit," Kurtis was glad the gym leader had called him, but he was worried what Aden might have to say.
That's when Guy's phone began to ring.

"First Aden calls you, now mine goes off. He must really be lonely to bother us both like this." Guy pulls the Pokegear out of his pocket by the wrist strap and swings it into his other hand and up to his head. "Hello? ...R-Roxy? ...I- you're- where? ...I can tell you don't want to talk about it. ...I am just so very happy to know you're safe." Professor lets out a heavy sigh of relief, sounding a bit choked up on the phone. "...Kurtis? Yeah, he's right here. We had a run-in with an assassin who really needs to 'Git Gud'. ...yeah. He's at the hospital now, alive and well. ...Hey, Roxy? I'm uh, um. Be safe, okay?"
Guy slumped down in the chair, no jokes to be heard. He closes his eyes and leans his head back, "Kurtis. I don't know why, but she was asking about you. Her return... it cannot be coincidence. Or maybe it is." Slowly, Guy lifted himself from the chair, heading to the door. "That phone call has left me emotionally drained, though nothing was really said. I need to go home and just take a nap. Sorry that I am out of hilarious things to say. I will be back to myself after some rest. I'll talk to you later, Kurtis." He gave a nod to Marcus, despite not yet knowing his name. "Maybe you too, kid."
Professor Phillips departs from the room, headed home. Roxy, why now? I hope you have nothing to do with this...

"That was... strange." Marcus raised an eyebrow after Guy's departure. "Hope he's okay..."
Marcus looked back at Kurtis, and seeing the man looking much better than he had been immediately after the Crobat attack, he commented "You're looking better. I'll leave my contact information with you, and if you ring me up me and my new Noivern will come as soon as we can. Mostly because you're a bounty-hunter's equivalent of bait, but..." Marcus gave the Gym Leader a smile of camaraderie. "Thanks for the badge and the battle. Get well soon. I'm going to go see what the police will give me for my help, if they're not too pissed about me coming to see you first."
With that Marcus turned to do as he claimed.
